A cleaning MUST have - White distilled vinegar!

I love to have a squeaky clean home and I'm always looking for the best cleaning agent that doesn't have those darn bad smelling, not good for you chemicals in it. WELL I'VE FOUND IT! White distilled vinegar works wonders as long as you know what to pair it with.

Our white bathtub is one of the worst things to keep looking pearly white. You can scrub and scrub, spray and spray and in the long run I still have a nasty, crusty looking tub that is far from white. Logically I know its clean, but after all that hard work I would really like it to look that way. I'll buy certain cleaners that require a window being opened and the room being evacuated (literally) for hours, and after some major elbow grease my tub will be nice and white. But WHO wants to have to do ALL of that, I most certainly do NOT.

I recently came across a blog that I wish I could remember so I could give credit, however, I sadly do not know it.   On this blog I discovered a recipe for a wonderful shower cleaner using white distilled vinegar, and Dawn blue dish soap. Below is how to prepare it:

  • Heat 12 oz of white distilled vinegar (I microwaved mine for 2 min, be careful its HOT)
  • Pour vinegar into spray bottle (I recommend using a funnel, if you spill it on you it will blister I promise, I know)
  • Add 10 oz of Dawn blue dish soap (you CANNOT substitute this, brand or color; do not try, it will not work)
  • Lightly shake bottle, you don't want any suds
  • SPRAY EVERYTHING, cover every inch of your shower, including your shower curtain*
  • Let sit for several hours (I let mine sit for about 3 hours). The original blog I found this on said that for tough stains let sit overnight, I found this unnecessary. I started me up a pretty long movie, and after it was done I headed back to the shower to rinse.
  • Rinsing was a breeze. I simply took a wet wash-cloth and wiped everything down, rinsing the cloth every-so-often. It wasn't back breaking labor, just a simple wipe of the cloth.
* I have found the easiest way to clean a shower curtain is to take it outside on a nice sunny day and lay it on the ground dirty side up and put your cleaner on it. Then wash it down with the hose pipe (as we North Carolinian's call it) If you think that's a little too southern for you then do it the hard way and leave it hanging up in your shower. My goal of cleaning is to go the laziest route possible.  I ain't scrubbin if I ain't gotta!

Onward my trusty steed!

Now for my next fantastic cleaning agent we shall make stain releaser!!! Here again I do not know who's blog I found this on (Hey I'm new to this, so bare with me). This works wonders on ANY stain. Yes, I said ANY! Whether its a fresh stain or a set in stain I will guarantee it will be removed!

This recipe is simple and cost effective as well. All you need is: Baking soda, white distilled vinegar, and liquid laundry detergent. Below is instructions:
  • On the dry stain, cover with liquid laundry detergent, scrub in with toothbrush.
  • Cover stain and laundry detergent with baking soda.
  • Pour white distilled vinegar on baking soda (your gonna have a foamy mess, but its okay! This is basically all the ingredients for a childs homemade volcano, except for the food coloring - of course!
  • Let this sit for 15-30 min (if you forget it and hours go by, thats no big deal)
  • Wash as usual. The stain will be gone.
I tried this on cloths that have been sitting because they have had this horrible grease stain and nothing had removed it, UNTIL THIS!!!

Last but most certainly not least!

My home is a very old home and the plumbing in my house is always getting stopped up. Store bought drain cleaner can get a little pricey, especially when you have to buy it frequently. SO I decided to look for a non-chemical and cheaper route.

Homemade drain cleaner: you will need - Baking soda, and white distilled vinegar.
  • In clogged drain pour 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Then pour in 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar*
  • Let sit for 30 min then flush with hot water
*Do not mix together then pour in, when the two combine it makes one heck of a mess if its not contained.

I hope that all of the home ideas I have provided will be of tremendous help to everyone. I have tried all three of these and they have all worked wonders for me. I give them all an A+

Herb substitutions

I hate it when I'm in the middle of cooking and I see an herb is called for that I don't have, well today my friend my first ever blog is a link to a page of all the substitutions you can use for each common herb:  Herb substitution

I don't know that anyone will be reading this blog, really don't care. But if you do, I hope you are a cooker as I am and that this helps you out.

So for todays recipe (which I needed the Herb substitution for) I am making Lemon Olive Chicken. Recipe courtesy of Martha Stewart. Lemon Olive Chicken I will post later how this recipe turned out.
